Job Description

Supply Nation’s vision is of a vibrant, prosperous and sustainable Indigenous business sector in Australia.

The Governance Officer is responsible for the coordination, administration and support for the organisation’s governance frameworks, ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory, and internal requirements. The Governance Officer supports the Governance, Risk & Assurance Manager (or equivalent) to deliver effective governance practices across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

Cultural leadership and advocacy

  • Champion cultural values and integrity within the organisation, suppliers and members.
  • Foster a culture of cultural learning, respect and inclusion among staff and stakeholders.
  • Respect and embed cultural practices and knowledge as BAU.
  • Develop and implement initiatives to support and grow the organisation’s Indigenous workforce.

Governance and compliance

  • Support the effective operation of governance frameworks, policies and systems, ensuring they remain practical and fit for purpose.
  • Maintain governance registers, compliance calendars and the policy repository, ensuring accuracy and timely review.
  • Maintain the integrated management system and related quality and environment activities, and safety in collaboration with People & Culture, to ensure ongoing compliance with certified standards.
  • Support compliance with the organisation’s constitution, legislative, regulatory and internal requirements, including standards, escalating issues as required.
  • Facilitate regular reporting of contractual obligations to external bodies including philanthropic trusts and government agencies, and support the Governance, Risk & Assurance Manager with operational reporting to the Board and broader organisation.
  • Support Board and Committee processes, including coordination of papers, actions and statutory reporting (e.g. ACNC, ASIC).

Privacy and information governance

  • Embed privacy practices into day-to-day operations by providing practical advice on obligations and appropriate handling of personal and sensitive information.
  • Coordinate Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) for new initiatives involving personal information.
  • Coordinate intake and triage of privacy requests, incidents and breaches, including assessments, containment and notification where required.
  • Ensure privacy risks and data handling practices are appropriately managed within governance and risk frameworks.

Risk, audit and assurance

  • Support implementation and ongoing management of the organisations risk management framework and supporting policies, processes, procedures and tools.
  • Maintain risk registers and work with risk owners to monitor controls, emerging risks and treatment actions.
  • Coordinate internal audit activities and track corrective actions through to completion.  
  • Analyse risk and assurance information to support reporting and decision making.
  • Contribute to business continuity and emergency preparedness activities.

Complaints and feedback

  • Act as a Complaints Coordinator, managing end to end handling of external complaints in a fair, timely and consistent manner.
  • Coordinate intake, triage, case allocation and resolution of complaints, including managing low risk matters.
  • Maintain complaints records and monitor trends, risks and corrective actions.
  • Support reporting of complaints insights to internal and external stakeholders as required.
  • Promote a constructive feedback culture to support service improvement.

Capability and continuous improvement

  • Provide practical guidance, tools and training to support staff capability across governance, privacy, risk and complaints.
  • Identify and implement improvements to systems and processes to ensure they are efficient and proportionate.
  • Monitor relevant legislative and sector developments and support updates to organisational practices.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, confidentiality and continuous improvement.

Workplace health and safety

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment while complying with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Escalate all workplace accidents and hazards and implement immediate action for identified hazards if able to do so.
  • Participate in workplace consultative meetings and recommend improvements to relevant workplace health and safety practices within the workplace.

Desired Skills and Experience

Key selection criteria

  • Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures and the issues impacting Indigenous Australians in business.
  • Tertiary qualifications in public administration, law, commerce, business, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in similar governance, compliance or risk roles within not-for-profit, regulated or Indigenous business environment.
  • Competency in governance frameworks, regulatory obligations, risk management principles, and assurance programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordination of complaints handling, service improvement and/or stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Competency in ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment), and ISO 45001 (Safety) standards and maintenance of management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret data, assess risks, to inform governance recommendations and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Strong attention to detail ensuring accuracy and compliance in documentation and reporting.
  • Demonstrated capability to work collaboratively with stakeholders.
  • Strong time management and prioritisation in handling concurrent governance activities.
  • Clear, concise communication.

Additional requirements

This position is designated as requiring a satisfactory National Police Check as an inherent requirement. Appointment to the role is subject to the successful completion of a criminal history check and the provision of a clearance deemed acceptable by Supply Nation in line with policy. Rescreening is also required at regular intervals and under specific conditions.
